Website Moved

Michel van der Hoek

After a long fallow period, during which I have done not only “serious”work in Germanic philology but also indulged in other leisure time pursuits, I have finally bitten the bullet and found a professional webhost for the Anglo-Saxon Bible website. This renewed interest was spurred by a number of inquiries about the website in recent weeks. I hope to be adding more materials soon.

Selections from Acts Added

Thanks to the work by Rachel Klippenstein, the website now has a compilation of selections from the book of Acts. These selections are quotations from Acts as found in Old English prose writers. [read it in PDF]. [Posted 13 June 2007]

Gospel of Mark Complete

Again, after a long break, I have been able to get another entire book of the Bible complete. The Gospel of Mark was completed through the work of Rich Rhodes and Mark Langley. [read it in HTML or PDF]. [Posted 14 July 2006]

24 April 2005 (Vol. 3 No. 1)

New Texts Added

Transcription of Luke, part of Mark from J.W. Bright's Edition now available

After having been delinquent with regard to the website for a long time, I can finally announce that two more texts have been made available. The entire gospel of Luke was kindly made available by a contributor whose name has unfortunately gone missing in the archival chaos of my old computer. This version will need some editing (mostly cleaning up the layout) but I do not have time for that now, so accept it as it is. It has been added in HTML and PDF. [read it in HTML or PDF].

Rich Rhodes has finished the first four chapters of Mark and a part of the fifth. I have added the HTML version to the website. [read it in HTML]

The person who sent me Luke should get in touch with me so he or she can receive credit for the work, but be patient with me regarding credit in the header of the website. I can’t access the header at the moment.[Posted 24 April 2005]

Gospel According to John Being Added

Transcription from J.W. Bright's Edition being made available

This summer I have made a start with transcribing the Gospel according to John from the 1904 edition by J.W. Bright. As this is still in progress, I will reserve further comments until later. At the moment I can also say that Rich Rhodes is working on the gospel of Mark, which I will also make available as soon as possible. [Posted 25 October 2003] [read the newest addition...]

Help Needed

If you are an Anglo-Saxon crazy like myself, help me on this project. At the moment it is a really small-time affair. I am trying to ten things myself and that just makes things really slow. There is some hope that I will be able to transcribe the book of John fairly soon. Two other people are working on transcribing and translating. I invite you to join us. First Epistle to the Thessalonians Added

New Translation now available

On 24 July we finished work on the translation of Paul's First Epistle to the Thessalonians. Work on this relatively short letter was finished quickly thanks to the encouragement received over the past weeks. We hope it will be a valuable addition to the site. The newest Bible book was translated by the editor of this site, Michel van der Hoek, who has benefited greatly from access to a greater number of Anglo-Saxon Christian texts. Glossary of Words in the Translations

Inevitably, when translating from modern Bibles one runs into problems. Sometimes a word one wants is not always available or it is difficult to render a modern English word. We try to be as accurate as possible and try to give account of where we get those more central and/or difficult words. Canterbury Psalter Being Added

Transcription from 1889 Edition In Progress

The latest addition to the Bible Translation Project are the first 9 Psalms (Vulgate) from ´Eadwine's Canterbury Psalter.´ Transcription is in progress on the text which is taken from a 19th century edition by Fred Harsley, the 92nd volume in the excellent series by the Early English Text Society which published their first volume officially in 1864. The editor of this site will attempt to reproduce an accurate copy of the text in Harsley's book, although some corrections of minor inconsistencies or errors will be undertaken. BTP-Site Gets Total Overhaul

The website of the Bible Translation Project has seen a dramatic renewal. With the book of Romans finished and published and Ælfric's Heptateuch slowly gathering pace, the ambitious dreams of the project started to take on a bit more of the realistic. To make access to the material easier, the website has received a make-over. The site now has a more manageable table of contents, which also immediately grants an overview of the extent of the work and the availability of Bible texts in Old English. Of course, this is all work in progress, and open to criticism and suggestions. [Posted 18 July]

First Ten Psalms Published

The first ten Psalms, edited from the Paris Prose Psalter, are now available from this site. The text is authentic Old English, although some minor editing has been carried out to get the text more in line with modern Bibles. [read the newest additions...]

Translation of Romans Finished

The translation of the book of Romans has been finished. A first complete edition is available from this site. Translation on the book has been carried out by Michel van der Hoek and Matthew Carver. [read Romans...]
